Red Bull is one of the most recognisable beverage brands in the world. Its blue and silver cans, two red bulls and unmistakable slogan have become almost impossible to miss. But Red Bull did not actually begin in Austria, and the drink that became a global energy brand was not entirely a European invention. Its story began thousands of kilometres away in Thailand, with a local energy drink called Krating Daeng. In the 1970s, Krating Daeng was created by Chaleo Yoovidhya, a Thai entrepreneur who developed an inexpensive energy drink aimed at workers, drivers and people who needed to stay alert for long hours. The drink was very different from the Red Bull we know today. It came in a small glass bottle, had a sweeter taste and was designed primarily for the local Thai market. Its name, Krating Daeng, translates roughly to "Red Bull." Then came Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian marketing executive who was travelling through Thailand in the early 1980s. During his trip, he discovered Krating Daeng and found that it helped him deal with jet lag. But instead of simply enjoying the drink and moving on, Mateschitz saw something bigger. He believed the concept could work outside Thailand. Mateschitz approached Chaleo, and the two eventually formed a partnership. They adapted the original drink for Western consumers, changing its taste and carbonation while keeping the core idea intact. They also created a new visual identity around the two bulls facing each other, inspired by the original Krating Daeng branding. The company itself became Red Bull GmbH, with Mateschitz taking responsibility for bringing the product to international markets. In 1987, Red Bull launched in Austria. But the challenge was much bigger than simply introducing another beverage. At the time, the concept of an energy drink was still unfamiliar to many European consumers. Red Bull therefore had to create not just demand for a product, but an entirely new category in the market. This is where Mateschitz's marketing instincts became crucial. Instead of competing with traditional soft drinks by focusing on taste, ingredients or price, Red Bull built an entirely different world around itself. The brand began associating itself with energy, adventure, performance and excitement. It sponsored extreme sports, supported athletes and eventually became involved in events across motorsport, football, aviation and other high-energy pursuits. The brand's famous "Gives You Wings" positioning fit perfectly into this strategy. Red Bull was no longer simply selling a caffeinated drink. It was selling a feeling and a lifestyle. The can became a symbol of energy and possibility, while the brand's marketing made it feel less like a beverage company and more like an entertainment and sports company. What makes the story even more interesting is how much of Red Bull's success came from understanding what to change and what to preserve. The drink itself was adapted for a new market, but the core identity of Krating Daeng remained visible through the name, the bulls and the basic concept. A product that had been created for Thai workers and drivers was transformed into a global brand without completely losing its original roots. Today, Red Bull is much more than an energy drink. It owns sports teams, sponsors athletes, produces entertainment and creates some of the most recognisable branded content in the world. Yet behind all of that is a story that started with a small Thai beverage that an Austrian traveller discovered during a trip. Red Bull's journey is a reminder that sometimes the next global idea is not something that needs to be invented from scratch.
