Sometimes, the biggest business ideas begin with the smallest inconveniences.Imagine trying to fit a table into your car, only to realise that it simply won't fit. Most people would probably look for a bigger car or arrange another way to transport it. But what if the solution was to remove the table legs? That seemingly ordinary thought helped shape one of the most recognisable business models in the world. This is the story of IKEA, a brand that didn't just change how people buy furniture. It changed how furniture is designed, packaged, transported and assembled.
It All Started with a Table That Wouldn't Fit
Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden, IKEA began with a simple ambition: to offer well-designed, functional products at prices that more people could afford. As the furniture business grew, transportation became a challenge. Bulky furniture was expensive to ship, occupied considerable storage space and was often damaged during delivery. These costs made it difficult for IKEA to maintain the affordable pricing it wanted to offer. Then came a small but important moment in 1956.Gillis Lundgren, an IKEA designer, was trying to transport a LÖVET table for a catalogue photoshoot. The table wouldn't fit into his car. His solution? Remove its legs. What looked like a practical workaround turned into something much bigger. The idea of separating furniture into compact, flat packages gave birth to IKEA's now-famous flat-pack concept.
Turning a Problem into a Business Advantage
The genius of flat-pack furniture wasn't simply that it made tables easier to transport. It changed the economics of the entire furniture business.By packaging furniture in flat boxes, IKEA could transport more products in less space, reduce storage requirements and minimise the risk of damage during delivery. But the most interesting part of the model was what happened next.Instead of delivering fully assembled furniture, IKEA allowed customers to take their products home and assemble them themselves. This meant customers became an active part of the process. They picked up their furniture, transported it and put it together, while IKEA could focus on making the products more affordable and efficient to distribute. It was a clever exchange. Customers contributed time and effort, while gaining access to well-designed furniture at more accessible prices. The company wasn't just cutting costs. It was rethinking where costs could be removed from the customer experience without compromising the product's core value.
The Customer Became Part of the Business Model
Most businesses try to make every step of the customer journey effortless. IKEA took a slightly different approach. It introduced a model where customers were willing to do some of the work themselves because the overall value made sense.Think about it. You walk into an IKEA store, explore beautifully designed spaces, select a product, pick up a flat-packed box and take it home. Then comes the familiar experience of opening the box, following the instructions and assembling your furniture. The assembly process might test your patience, but it also gives customers a sense of participation in creating something for their homes. This approach is often discussed through the IKEA effect, a behavioural concept associated with the increased value people place on things they have partially created themselves. The brand had found a way to make customer participation an important part of its value proposition.
More Than Furniture: An Entire Brand Experience
What makes IKEA particularly interesting is that flat-pack furniture was only one part of a much larger strategy. The company built its identity around functional design, affordability and making everyday living better. Its stores became destinations rather than just places to purchase furniture. Instead of displaying products in isolation, IKEA created room settings that helped customers imagine how those products could fit into their own homes. Its catalogues, product naming system, self-service warehouses and even its in-store restaurants contributed to a distinctive shopping experience.Every element had a purpose. IKEA wasn't simply selling a chair, a wardrobe or a dining table. It was helping people visualise and create their ideal living spaces. That is the difference between selling a product and building a brand experience.
What Can Businesses Learn from IKEA?
IKEA's journey offers a few important lessons that go beyond the furniture industry.1. Innovation doesn't always mean inventing something new.Sometimes, it means looking at an existing problem differently. IKEA didn't need to reinvent furniture. It needed to rethink how furniture reached customers.2. Cost efficiency can become a competitive advantage.Instead of treating transportation and storage as unavoidable expenses, IKEA redesigned its processes around them. The result was a business model that supported its promise of affordability.3. Understand what your customers are willing to do.Not every customer wants a completely effortless experience. Sometimes, people are happy to participate when the value they receive makes the effort worthwhile.4. Every business decision contributes to brand positioning.IKEA's affordability isn't communicated only through advertisements. It is reflected in its packaging, product design, store layout and shopping experience. The business model itself reinforces the brand promise.
The Bigger Picture: Sometimes, the Best Ideas Are Hiding in Everyday Problems
Today, IKEA is a global home furnishing brand, but one of the ideas that helped shape its journey began with a table that wouldn't fit inside a car. That's what makes this story worth remembering.Businesses often look for the next big innovation in technology, product development or advertising. But sometimes, the opportunity lies in questioning the way things have always been done.IKEA didn't just find a better way to transport furniture. It found a better way to connect product design, operations, pricing and customer experience into one cohesive business model. And perhaps that's the biggest marketing lesson here: A strong brand isn't built only by what it says. It's built by how the entire business delivers on what it promises.
