In the 1960s, buying detergent in India was not an everyday decision for everyone. The domestic detergent market was largely dominated by multinational companies, and detergents were expensive enough to be considered a premium household product. Then, in 1969, a chemist from Gujarat decided to change that. His name was Karsanbhai Patel, and his product was a simple detergent powder called Nirma. Patel began making detergent powder himself and selling it door to door in the neighbourhoods of Ahmedabad. What made the product stand out was its price. Nirma was sold at ₹3 per kilogram when the cheapest competing detergent reportedly cost around ₹13. That was not just a small price difference. It opened the category to a completely different group of consumers who had previously found branded detergents too expensive. But low price alone would not have been enough. Nirma's proposition was built around giving consumers an affordable product without giving up effective cleaning. The company describes the detergent as being introduced at almost one third of competitor prices, helping encourage trial and eventually creating loyalty among consumers. In doing so, Nirma did something bigger than compete for existing detergent buyers. It helped create a new mass market for detergent in India. The way Nirma reached consumers was equally important. Instead of beginning with an expensive premium positioning, the brand focused on affordability, distribution and mass-market communication. Its advertising eventually became one of the most recognisable parts of the brand, helping turn a relatively simple washing powder into a household name. Nirma itself describes its detergent as the product that started its consumer journey and says its mass-market advertising played a major role in making the brand widely recognised. Then came the famous Nirma girl. The image of the young girl in a white dress, dancing through the Nirma advertising, became closely associated with the brand. The advertising was simple, memorable and built around the everyday consumer rather than luxury or aspiration. At a time when detergent advertising could feel like a conversation between large companies, Nirma spoke directly to the households it wanted to reach. The strategy worked. Nirma's affordable positioning allowed it to move beyond the consumers who were already buying branded detergents and reach a much larger market. The company says the brand created an entirely new popular segment in the detergent category by targeting consumers at the lower end of the market with a value-for-money proposition. Nirma did not stop with washing powder. After establishing itself in detergents, the company expanded into detergent cakes in 1987 and later into bathing soaps and other consumer products. The business also began diversifying into chemicals and industrial products. Nirma Limited was formally established in 1980, and over the following decades the company expanded into areas including soda ash, caustic soda, salt and other chemicals. What makes the Nirma story interesting is that the brand did not win by trying to look like the companies it was competing against. It identified a consumer group that the existing market was not serving effectively and built its proposition around them. The ₹3 price tag was not simply a discount. It was the starting point for a completely different market strategy. Nirma's journey is a reminder that sometimes the biggest opportunity is not in convincing existing customers to switch brands. It is in asking a much bigger question: Who isn't buying this product yet, and why? In 1969, Karsanbhai Patel found his answer. And a ₹3 packet of washing powder helped turn it into one of India's most recognisable homegrown brands.
